‘Capital Capabilities Community Quilt Project’
Creative Endeavors was thrilled to participate in the ‘Capital Capabilities Community Quilt Project’. Coordinated by the Schenectady Jewish Community Center (JCC), this collaborative effort consists of blocks of fabrics assembled together to celebrate the artistic talents of individuals with developmental and other disabilities. The multi-panel community quilt demonstrates how members of different community organizations visualized the theme: “Dream, Create, Achieve.” Although most of the squares were created by artists with disabilities, some were not with one contributed by Niskayuna elementary students.
Besides Creative Endeavors, these organizations took part in this fun project — Alternative Living Group, Congregation Agudat Achim, Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Gates of Heaven, Center for Disability Services, Hamilton Hill Arts Center, Living Resources, Schenectady JCC, Schenectady ARC and the YWCA.
Our artists patch is the one on the lower right. This true community quilt has been travelling around the Capital District. We are proud that it will be on display at Creative Endeavors until the end of March.
The concept of Capital Capabilities was created in 2013, when JCC leaders decided they wanted to create an event that would strengthen their social mission. Local rabbis and JCC members joined to form a steering committee and devised the idea of an art-focused event that would bring abled and disabled community members together. They then extended invitations to local agencies that support people with disabilities.
